Notts County Ladies under 16s travelled to a cold windy Platts Lane the home of Keyworth United. County played Keyworth a month ago in the Notts FA challenge shield completion and despite winning 3-0 it was a tough encounter and difficult to break them down, so they knew what they were likely to be up against. Keyworth didn’t disappoint as they were clearly up for the game as they closed down quickly and were battling for every ball. Playing against the wind the young magpies were struggling to play the ball out from the back and Keyworth’s through balls and pacey strikers were causing problems. Just before the break a keeper error gifted Keyworth with the opener 1-0. Firm words at half-time and a reminder of what this team can achieve saw the visitors play with a bit more purpose and with the wind on their backs were playing large spells in the home sides half. County without a substitute had wide midfielder Kelsea Marriott fouled and she no longer played a part in this game with a nasty foot injury and a request to Santa for a new pair of boots. With ten players County were pushing hard for the equaliser which came from Sara Duffield who twisted and turned her way through the bodies in front of goal to smack the ball into the bottom corner 1-1. When things were looking up County were hit another blow when Abbie Truman received a blow to the head and despite wanting to continue left the game with County now playing with 9 players, rather than sitting back and defending the magpies continued to push for the winner and with 10 minutes remaining County took the lead when Polly Collier ran onto a through ball and helped the ball on passed the advancing keeper 1-2. The last minutes were frantic as Keyworth were throwing everything at it and Notts looked to see the game out. Player of the match was awarded to Megan Weston who battled well and played some neat passing football. Credit must go to Keyworth who battled throughout but County who were clearly not at their best pulled off a fine victory and with 9 players for a big chunk of the game.
